Factors Affecting Quality of Life among Breast Cancer Survivors

Abstract
Breast cancer has become one of the most frequent type of cancers among women and the incidence is still increasing in Korea. However, not much knowledge has been accumulated about quality of life of breast cancer survivors. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of quality of life and investigate factors affecting quality of life among breast cancer survivors. Of 1180 eligible women, 1089 women completed the surveys. Quality of life was assessed using FACT-B and the Ladder of Life Scale. Socio-demographic characteristics were included in the survey and medical factors were compiled by reviewing each survivor¡¯s medical chart. The level of quality of life among breast cancer survivors was low compared with other studies using Fact-B and Ladder of Life Scale. Different factors were related to each of quality of domain but education, economic status and time since surgery were the most significantly and consistently related to across all of the quality of life domain. In multivariate analysis, education, job, economic status, time since surgery, operation method, chemotherapy, and daily activities of living were significant predictors for FACT-B total and education, job, economic status, time since surgery, menopause and daily activities of living were significant for Ladder of Life. Based on this study results, those who could be high risk for impaired quality of life were identified. Appropriate intervention strategies were recommended in terms of both practice and policy that specifically target their needs.
